Expressions of interest are now open for the creation of a new work that will inform the visual identity of the 2027 Clarence Jazz Festival.

Each year, we commission a visual artist to shape the look and feel of the festival. The final work appears throughout the festival and is used across print and digital platforms, including integration into the iconic JAZZ festival branding.

The successful artist will receive an acquisitive $7,000 (+ GST if applicable) artist fee.

Applications close: Monday 1 June 2026.

About the opportunity

This opportunity supports a visual artist working in any medium to create a new visual work that will be incorporated into the 2027 Clarence Jazz Festival branding and reproduced across a range of formats and materials.

The selected artist will receive an acquisitive $7,000 (AUD) artist fee to develop the work which then becomes part of the City of Clarence Art Collection.  

The completed work is required by Friday 4 September 2026 to allow for design and production.

About Clarence Jazz Festival

Clarence Jazz Festival is Lutruwita / Tasmania’s largest and longest-running jazz festival, celebrating its 31st year in 2027.

Held each summer on the Eastern Shore of Timtumili Minanya / the River Derwent, on the lands of the Mumirimina people, the much-loved festival brings together local, national and international artists for a vibrant, inclusive, and diverse program.

The festival is held at Rosny Farm and attracts thousands of audience members each year.

The festival celebrates creativity, connection and place – our rich history, while looking to the future while creating space for new ideas, emerging artists and future generations.

Respect for Country and meaningful engagement with Palawa community are central to the festival’s ongoing development.

Who can apply?

This opportunity is open to Lutruwita / Tasmanian-based visual artists, designers and collectives working in any medium and at any career stage.

Clarence Jazz Festival is committed to supporting the growing diversity of our creative sector, both on and off the stage. As such, we strongly encourage applications from:

  • Palawa artists and other First Nations artists,
  • Emerging artists,
  • Artists from diverse cultural backgrounds and communities,
  • People living and working in regional areas,
  • Women and gender diverse artists,
  • LGBTQIA+ people
  • Artists living with disability.

Timeline & key dates

  • Applications open: Friday 1 May 2026
  • Applications close: Monday 1 June 2026, 5pm
  • Applicants notified: Friday 19 June 2026
  • Final artwork due: Friday 4 September 2026

The selected artist will be invited to attend the festival in February 2027.

How will my work be used?

The commissioned work will inform the overall visual identity of the festival branding, site, and promotion.

Examples of uses include – but are not limited to:

  • posters, programs and print material
  • website, external digital platforms, and social media
  • site dressing and signage
  • merchandise and event collateral
  • bar/food signage and menus

Please note:

  • Artwork may be cropped, resized, or adapted for different formats including in black and white
  • Text may be overlaid on the image
  • Elements of the work may be used independently within the design system
  • Reproduction may occur across a range of materials (e.g. vinyl, fabric, paper)

If you have specific concerns about how your work is used (for example in relation to alcohol service areas), this can be noted in your application and will not affect assessment.

Application Requirements & Selection Criteria

Applicants are asked to submit the following with this form: 

  • Artist CV
  • Short biography (max. 250 words)
  • Proposal outlining your concept and how it could inform the festival identity (max. 300 words)
  • Five (5) images of relevant previous work
  • Any relevant links

Maximum artwork size: 150 x 200cm

Each application will be assessed by the Rosny Farm team and an external Palawa advisor against the following selection criteria:   

Applications will be assessed on:

  • Artistic quality
  • Response to the themes of vibrancy, gathering, celebration, and respect for Country
  • Versatility and visual impact of proposed work for branding and promotional use. 
  • Demonstrated ability/ willingness to work collaboratively to deliver on a creative brief.
